Investigating Miracles

c May 2005 Linda Munro

What is a miracle? According to Aquinas (in Summa Contra Gentiles, III) "those things are properly called miracles which are done by divine agency beyond the order commonly observed in nature.” To some, the birth of a healthy child, receiving something just as you desperately need that something you have received, or observing an unexplainable aspiration. The question here is what does the general public conceive as a miracle? Have any of my readers experienced what they believe is a true miracle? Please, read the following article and tell us what you think.

Today, we are a nation of skeptics; things that were at one time universally accepted as signs from God, and miracles are looked at with not only skepticism, but also the means by which to explain the so-called miracle.

December 1995: Buffalo, NY firefighter Don Herbert answered a call for assistance; a Buffalo area apartment was on fire. While searching for trapped victims; the roof collapsed, knocking the air mask from Herbert’s face. While fellow firefighter’s struggled through the debris for their fallen comrade, Herbert spent six full minutes without oxygen, sending him into a coma, which he remained for the next three months.

When Herbert recovered from his comatose condition, he had been rubbed of several functions that we take for granted, including speech, site and the ability to walk. He was removed from the hospital shortly thereafter and placed in a nursing home, where he has remained for the past ten years, unable to care for himself, unable to even communicate; until a few days ago.

Out of the blue, firefighter Don Herbert began speaking to those at the nursing home who have been tending to his daily needs. He wanted to speak to his family. The staff immediately contacted Hebert’s wife and began a conversation with her. He spent the next fourteen hours attempting to revive his memory and catch up with everything he has missed. For some unknown reason, he has had a miraculous recovery and he feels that he was unconscious for a mere three months.

The question is: do you believe this to be a miracle? Is this truly a define intervention, or a scientific breakthrough that one will soon explain? I am interested in looking not only for items that appear to be miracles [at least in my perception] and exactly how others perceive these miracles. Please email me [reallyfreeny@yahoo.com miracle in subject line] with your thoughts.
