Not long ago, I wrote a history of Mother’s Day; now, father’s day is upon us, so I feel it is time to dedicate a page to a little history and a memory of my Dad.
Sonora Smart Dodd who lived in Spokane, Washington admired the efforts that had won a national tribute to Mothers in the United States; now she wanted to do something special as well; something to honor her father, a farmer, a Veteran of the Civil War and a single father to six children after the death of his wife. Dodd, with the support of both the Mayor of Spokane and the Governor of Washington, organized the event to coincide with her father’s birthday; June 19, 1910.
Although many suggest that President Calvin Coolidge had a hand in making Father’s Day a National event due to his 1924 support of the idea; it would not be until 1956 that a Joint Resolution of Congress would officially recognize Father's Day. Another ten years would pass before President Lyndon Johnson would sign a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June an official National Holiday; Father’s Day. Of course, the proclamation alone did little not make the date a permanent holiday; the honor of finally making Father’s Day a permanent Holiday goes to President Richard M Nixon in 1972.
Twenty years later Father’s Day became the fifth most popular date on which to send greeting cards; with an estimated $95 million dollars being spent on greeting cards. Although Father’s Day is an official holiday rather than a Hallmark holiday; Hallmark certainly capitalizes on the sentiment.
